The 2009 God of Fire Charity Dinner for Children in Need will be held at Hotel Bel-Air on September 26, 2009.

God of Fire and Prometheus are proud to present Andy Garcia with the 2009 God of Fire Man of the Year Award.

Gary Sinise and Barbara Sinatra received the God of Fire Person of the Year Award in 2007 and 2008 respectively for their charity work for children in need.

The proceeds from the charity auction will be donated to:

Beyond Shelter and Para Los Niños
     Cigar Family Charitable Foundation

Beyond Shelter (www.beyondshelter.org) helps homeless families with children, and Para Los Niños (www.paralosninos.org), low-income children and families in the greater Los Angeles area.

Cigar Family Charitable Foundation (www.cf-cf.org) is a non-profit charitable foundation established by the Fuente and Newman families to improve the lives of children in the Dominican Republic.

It will be a great evening of fine food and wine accompanied by the 2009 release of the God of Fire cigars -- very special and rare vintage cigars blended by the two living legends of cigars, Carlos Fuente, Sr. and Carlito Fuente.

The 2009 God of Fire Man of the Year: Andy Garcia

In January 1990, I had the good fortune to be cast in what a friend of mine referred to as “The Italian Star Wars”: the motion picture Godfather III . Even though I had been acting professionally for 20 years, I arrived at Cinecitta Studios in Rome more nervous and apprehensive than I'd ever felt before.

The smile and hug I received from a fellow actor the moment I walked in would be the start of a life-long friendship. That fellow actor was Andy Garcia. We were the new guys on the block that day. Andy immediately sensed my nervousness and did everything he could to make me feel welcome and at ease. That's what Andy does, he welcomes. I had followed his career up to that point, and was already impressed with his acting. What I learned in the years since is that the depth of his talent is only exceeded by that of his character.

Early in my career, if someone had asked me to name my heroes in the movie business, I would have rattled off a predictable list—all well-known stars rich with the gifts of our trade. If I were to make that list now, after 40 years in the business, tempered by more than 30 years of marriage, and fathering two children, the names would be a bit different. I've found it takes more than talent to earn the respect of one's peers. It takes the whole package, and that includes putting one's life and career in balance. Andy has always done that. Our business does not make it easy for one to excel as a good husband or a good father, let alone a successful artist. Andy does it all because he has patterned his whole life on the principles of honesty, hard work, integrity and love.

No matter what your profession might be, few people in this day and age truly serve as role models. Andy has succeeded in that as well. His body of work speaks to his incontestable talent. His stature as a human being is also well-documented; one only needs to look upon the faces of his beautiful family to see the reflection of the man he is. It's more than a privilege for me to be able to call this man my friend—it's an honor and a blessing. The God of Fire committee could not have chosen a better honoree than Andy Garcia.

Andy will be with us on September 26th to raise funds for children in need. Please join us at Hotel Bel-Air on September 26th.

Beyond Shelter is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 in response to increasing numbers of homeless families in Los Angeles and the need for a more comprehensive approach to serving them. Today, the mission of the agency is to combat poverty and homelessness among families with children, and to enhance family economic security and well-being. In 1988, Beyond Shelter introduced a new program to end family homelessness - “Housing First” – which helps homeless families with children to move back into affordable housing as quickly as possible, rather than remain in shelters for months and sometimes years at a time. Once families are back in housing, Beyond Shelter helps families to rebuild their lives, including enrolling children in school and childcare and then helping parents to obtain employment. Over the past twenty years, more than 4,300 homeless families with children have been served. Beyond Shelter also develops affordable housing in inner-city neighborhoods and, since the 1992 Civil Unrest, has been developing the Broadway South Neighborhood Revitalization Project in South Central Los Angeles. The newest project is Broadway Village II, which includes a 50-unit apartment complex and a Neighborhood Resource Center serving families and children in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Para Los Niños opened its doors in 1980 in response to the plight of children living in Skid Row hotels. Initially, 45 children received daycare at the agency; today, in its 29th year of operation, Para Los Niños strives to address the root causes of poverty and annually assists 4,600 low-income children and youth, and 4,000 economically challenged families from 28 sites throughout Southern California.

The agency’s core programs revolve around educational and family support services. Education programs include early childhood services, Charter Schools (K-6), after-school enrichment, youth diversion and delinquency prevention, youth workforce services, and a life skills training and academic assistance program for transitioning foster youth. Para Los Niños offers emergency and ongoing comprehensive support to at-risk families, including food and shelter vouchers, child abuse and domestic violence prevention, parenting skills, and mental health services.

In 2001, the Fuente and Newman families, longtime business partners in the cigar industry, came together with the vision of improving children’s lives in the Bonao region of the Dominican Republic. What began as a simple dream of adding a wing onto the local elementary school has evolved into Cigar Family Charitable Foundation’s 23-acre complex that includes: primary and high schools; health center; sports and recreation facilities; and an organic farming area. Today, the Complex serves well over 5,000 families and their children, and has achieved tremendous results.

Prometheus International, Inc. and God of Fire, Inc. have raised over $1 Million for Cigar Family Charitable Foundation since 2000.

Because the Fuente and Newman families pay all administrative expenses such as accounting and legal, 100% of the donations benefit the children and families served by Cigar Family Charitable Foundation (www.cf-cf.org).
